What is Holistic Counselling?

The word HOLISTIC is characterized by the belief that the parts of something are interconnected and can be explained only by reference to the whole. In terms of treatment, it refers to the whole person, taking into account mental and emotional factors, rather than just the symptoms of an illness.

Why this is important should be obvious and yet this approach is still not widely used in treating a person’s health and wellbeing. Tending to focus primarily on symptoms and neglecting to get to the core issue.

When we get to the cause of an issue, it can restore our health to its optimal quality and functionality. There is often a lesson or experience that one will derive from the manifestation of the illness itself. Our bodies are magnificent and intelligent, with a consciousness of its own. It is through illness that it attempts to communicate and get us to pay attention to something. When a physical or mental illness occurs, this is often the last stand that our body is taking, because we may not be paying attention.

Holistic Counselling not only promotes finding balance, good health and wellbeing in all areas of our life - mind, body and spirit. It supports our journey in discovering what may be underlying an illness on an energetic/emotional or spiritual level. This is most often a process and comes with a lesson or change in your life that you may be required to implement.

For example, one issue that many new mothers can experience is back issues. Which to an extent we can accredit to pregancy, labour and the introduction of breast feeding. Although if best practices are being utilized and the body does not respond to treatment of the symptoms, then it could be something deeper that needs to be attended to.

The lower back represents stability and feeling supported. Upon further enquiry, the mother has found herself in a situation where she feels that she has to carry the burden of caring for this baby on her own. On deeper investigation, there is an underlying belief or childhood experience that has instilled this within her subconscious and it is now playing out in her reality.

The body and soul work together to unravel and resolve this issue, according to its own divine wisdom. As the Facilitator and Counsellor, my role is supporting that process with loving presence. Offering assistance and guidance as required. Essentially, every person is their own medicine, and it is only a matter of a person deciding to take responsibility of their own wellbeing that is required.

It is a truly magical and sacred experience, to be a part of witnessing someone’s healing and unfolding of their life’s journey. It is especially wonderful to see a family grow and blossom, when a mother takes her life into her hands and transforms it into more love and connection. As not only herself but those around her will greatly benefit.
